Hi :) Here is my first homework assignment (poem inspired by a random object)
Newspaper
A dangerous fuel
For the ones who are clearly
Addicted to shock and surprise?
Exposing the truth?
Or containing entirely
Of ink, paper, black and white lies?
Or practical tool and perhaps a
Necessity,
A current of current events,
Which puts time in line, carves the minds and the memories and seals what has been said and done.
Or maybe impartial, a keeper of
History?
(Which, every ten years… it gets
Repeated, removed or rewritten by victors, rephrased or restored or revamped...)
It gives secrets live
And seduces them shamelessly
No longer behind closed doors.
Or maybe extracts
With precision and playfulness
Facts that no one could ignore?
I like the way you’ve approached this – the series of questions/suggestions means we ‘see’ the object from different perspectives and there’s a sense of movement in the poem as you move from one perspective to the next. Using lines of such different lengths also creates some interesting effects (especially in the line ‘Repeated, removed …’). The only part where it loses a focus a little is the verse beginning ‘It gives secrets …’ – I’m guessing ‘live’ should be ‘life’ in that line.
