Hi guys, I am sharing my entry challenge story as well (to be honest not among the best ones I have written). All comments and feedback are welcome :)
“It’s actually the Milky Way,” said John. “You can see it spreading over the sky and giving the brave ones direction towards adventures.”
“John, this is just spilled milk on the floor. I know you are trying to cheer me up, but this is absurd,” said Michael.
“No, no, look closer. You can see the galaxies on its surface as little dots and the black hole in the middle which is sucking material into itself without mercy,” said John.
“Yeah, the milk is probably running through the wooden floor and pouring in mum’s kitchen right now. She will not be very happy about it,” said Michael.
“Did you know that our galaxy is almost as old as the universe itself? Only when I think about it I get goosebumps. We might actually consist of some of the big bang stardust,” said John.
“We might carry billion years old stardust, but our bodies are only able to live a pocketful of years,” said Michael.
They both remained silent for a bit. The cold wind was passing through the window and John pulled his big brother’s blanket on him. The red fabric was contrasting with Michael’s pale face like blood drops on fresh snow.
“Nothing dies in the universe, Mike, it is just energy moving from one form to another,” said John.
“You must be the biggest optimist in the world, little brother. I wish I was seeing the world through your eyes,” said Michael and coughed painfully. “Tell me one of your stories”.
“Ok, I will tell you one for two brothers. Stardust was a curious boy who did not have mother or father, but he had an older brother. They called the boy “Stardust” as he was reading every book for the stars he could find and he was spending hours in the dark observing the sky. One night he was looking at the moon when a figure in dark clothes approached him. By the look of him, the boy knew this was Death. Death greeted him politely and said he was coming for the soul of his brother. The boy begged the Death not to take him and asked whether there is a way to change his decision. Death though about it and ask the boy whether he would give up what he loved the most to save his brother’s life. The boy swallowed and looked at the stars. Million little lights reflected in his eyes impatient to show him their secrets. The boy said goodbye to them and promise the Death he would never look at the stars again if he spares his brother’s life. Death agreed and cross the two brothers life many many years after that when they were old and grey”
“Wasn’t the boy sad after that? Didn’t he miss his stars” asked Michael.
“No, because his brother started looking at them every evening and he was telling him what he sees. His eyes were so full with life when he was looking up that the boy could almost see the stars reflected in his eyes”
“It is a good story,” said Michael dozing off.
“I will draw you a picture of the Milky Way to keep you company” said John and get a piece of paper from the desk.
John’s mother was indeed not very happy to have milk dripping from the ceiling into the kitchen. John manages to please her by washing the dishes, cleaning the floor and making breakfast for everyone the next day. After that he went to bring Mike star-shaped pancake with some fruits and a glass of milk. Michael was sleeping with a smile and the picture of the Milky Way in his hand. John touched his shoulder to wake him up and realized Mike’s body was cold.
