- It`s actually The Milky Way, said John.
- Oh yeah? – exclaimed Cara. I`ve been dying to meet him.
- Come, I`ll introduce you.
- Wait, what? Now? No way! It`s The Milky Way! What am I gonna say, I can`t just go there and talk all naturally… I`m not at my best right now.
And she really wasn`t. The events that took place the previous day had left a permanent mark on her. But she wasn`t quite aware of this yet.
It was Christmas. What a curious time. Cara wasn’t much into Christmas. What she liked though was how calm the city got during holidays and all the random parties. Oh yes, the parties were extraordinary. Not because they were fancy, not at all, but because she got to meet friends she haven`t seen in a while. Moreover, she got to talk to random people she normally wouldn`t even look at. She was very shy and avoided people`s, especially stranger`s attention at any cost. She`d rather stay hungry than eat in front of strangers. The very thought of this made her shiver of embarrassment. That`s how timid Cara was. Except when she was drinking. Then she was becoming a whole different person, an extrovert. Alcohol was like a magical cloak to her. It hided all her uncertainties. As long as she was wearing it, no one would find out that she was actually an imposter, a fraud. Fortunately, during holidays she barely took that cloak off.
On Christmas day her friend Emma took her to the annual Veggie Christmas Party at Ted and Lina`s. Cara didn`t know them and wasn`t even a vegetarian. But she wasn’t much into meat, too. She was spending some days at her parents` house where all that was served was meat. Big fat pieces of meat that discussed her at some point. So the Veggie Christmas was her “starvation salvation” as she put it when Emma came to pick her up.
The party was great. The room filled with strangers would normally terrified Cara, but she was wearing her cloak already. All she cared about were the beetroot meatballs. They were magnificent. In fact, probably the best meatballs she had ever tasted in her entire life. And just how wonderfully they matched the Neapolitan wine she had brought! That`s why she enjoyed quite some. Naturally, by the time she ate over 10 beetroot meatballs and drank over 4 glasses of wine, she had become the center of the party. She was telling an amusing story about a lousy Christmas present she got from some relative. People were arranged in circle around her and looked like they were having the laugh of their life. There she was – shy Cara – standing in front of a group of strangers, feeling beautiful, confident and funny. Everybody ravished by her charm. And just then something happened. A sculpted male figure entered through the door and got her attention. What a luck this handsome man came exactly in this moment to see her triumph. Or so she thought.
- Well hello there! – Cara greeted him loudly. – What`s your name? No, no… Don`t tell me. I`m gonna call you Milky!
She named him after The Milky Way, her favorite DJ, whose record was playing at the moment. Perhaps his track had additionally boosted her confidence.
- Oh yeah? – Started the man, surprisingly annoyed - And I’m gonna call you Beetsy, after the beets on your teeth.
Everybody burst in laughter. Poor Cara. How could`ve she guessed that people weren’t laughing at her story in the first place. What they found amusing was watching her mumble with her mouth full and her teeth blueish from the red wine with pieces of beets stuck in between. Another thing she didn`t get at the time was that the man she called “Milky” was actually an albino. It`s hard to tell what is to blame for this terrible incident – weather it`s her near-sightedness or the contre-jour.
She wanted to forget that party ever happened. However, what she really couldn`t remember later was the rest of the evening. She was trying hard to figure it out in her head while John was insisting to introduce her to The Milky Way. He neglected her protests and before she knew it, she was standing next to The Milky Way, the DJ she was crazy about.
- Hey, Milky! John, remember? My friend Cara here is a big fan of yours.
Cara looked down and smiled with embarrassment, tucking her hair behind her right ear as if to shoo the awkwardness away. Thus a fresh tattoo was revealed. Big bold red letters alongside her ear that read “MILKY SUCKS”.
